Descending Inward:
An Encounter with Nature, Dharma and Neuroscience in the Grand Canyon

Descending Inward is Dr. Calderón’s reflective new post about his experiences walking the 25 mile Rim-to-Rim hike of the Grand Canyon. Walk with him as he recounts a story of survival, mindfulness, fear and interconnectedness, told from the overlapping perspectives of neuroscience and Buddhist teachings. It is a story depicting the ever-circling forces of life and beauty, in constant entwinement with entropy, fear and death; a story that weaves together the 4.5 billion year journey of the Earth, and the even older journey of the cosmos, with the interdependence of all organisms, then and now, all ancestors, all living beings, each single step.

From Descending Inward:

I looked one last time at my backpack, satisfied, it seemed complete enough. I left the books behind because at this point, there was nothing else they could add except pounds. 2:45 am I looked at my watch and called Liza one last time before entering 14 hours of hiking in mobile phone silence, text silence, off-the-grid silence.  Like spaceships traveling behind the moon, in the canyon we would have no reception, a bar-less desert, “I’ll call you when we surface… I love you, send my love to the kids and…thank you for supporting me.”    Read More…

Mindful living involves us all. In the caring for others, we care for ourselves, as we are all interconnected and depend on one another. Mindful Psychiatry supports our community through donations and public service. We also offer our podcast and this website as resources for the international community towards enhancing whole body health.

Whole Body Mental Health Radio is a show that thinks broadly about mental health and addictions, from the mind-body connection and genetics, to the community and the world. Listen live on WHIVfm, Wednesdays 7pm ct and subscribe to the podcast on iTunes.
